Oil + MUD (2021)

Curated by Jessica Todd

Morean Arts Center, St. Petersburg, FL

Overview

In my role as the Assistant Curator of Exhibitions at the Morean Arts Center, I curated and installed Oil + Mud, featuring the work of husband and wife artists Julie and Ehren Fritz Gerhard, up January 9 to February 14, 2021. The exhibition was part of a series centered around creative families.

Julie Gerhard creates sculptural works and installations using ceramics and fiber as materials to explore texture, space, and form. Her techniques range from conventional wheel throwing to machine sewing and fabrication. She chooses to allow her work to evolve and change by providing the opportunity for spontaneity through repetition. The end result is both satisfying from a distance as her work engages its environment as well as up close with subtle textures that surprise and delight.

Ehren Fritz Gerhard works somewhere in between scientific observation and romantic idealism to create living images that breathe and move. He uses a combination of personal photographic reference and painting from memory and emotion that allow his works to reveal a life of their own. Each successive layer of paint is imbued with the joy of discovery, fear for the unknown, and tension between life and death.
