Plays Well with Others is an exhibition curated by Jessica Todd featuring local and national artists who create work that engages with play and toys in interactive, mischievous, and subversive ways. The exhibition includes works of all media that entertain while disrupting the status quo; one could easily enjoy it as a collection of nostalgia and delight, but the artists have skillfully transformed the lighthearted theme of “play” into a critical dialogue of contemporary issues. This vibrant and immersive installation engages audiences of all ages and backgrounds and introduces fresh voices to the southwest Florida arts scene through (socially distant!) public programming.

Each of the Plays Well with Others artists expertly articulates broad concepts centered around play using media ranging from animation to inflatable sculpture to beading. Painter Whitney Hackett (Fort Myers, FL) and fiber artist LeBrie Rich (Portland, OR) explore familiar objects of Americana nostalgia, calling us to elevate the ordinary while critiquing mindless consumption. Evoking a favorite childhood toy, jeweler Breana Ferrara (Fitchburg, MA) explores the complexities of expectations around motherhood. Amelia Briggs’ (Nashville, TN) sculptures recall ambiguous toy forms that symbolize the building blocks of identity, while Alexander Martin’s (Peoria, IL) interactive dress-up sculpture allows viewers to play with the very constructs of identity. Asser Saint-Val (Miami, FL) seeks to activate the audience’s imagination through a giant inflatable sculpture based on the spiritual qualities of the brain pigment Neuromelanin. Two FGCU grads, illustrator Chloe Lewis (New York, NY) and graphic artist Isabella Baquerizo (Naples, FL), take on a narrative approach: Lewis tells the story of a girl discovering the journey of life through play, and Baquerizo reimagines anonymous submissions from friends and strangers who told her the “strangest imaginary game they played as a child,” yielding amusing animations that remind us every child deserves to dream freely.

This exhibition is generously funded through the City of Fort Myers Arts & Culture Grant program.

Breana moved to Fitchburg from Boston after graduating with her BFA in Fine Arts 3D with a concentration in Jewelry/Metalsmithing from the Massachusetts College of Art & Design, where she was nominated for the Windgate Fellowship in 2017. Recently, she was accepted into New York City Jewelry Week's 2019-2020 One for the Future program for emerging jewelers. In her jewelry, Breana uses fiber techniques such as bead embroidery, bead weaving, lace-making, sewing, and crochet along with traditional metalsmithing like repousse, enameling, and stone setting, to make pieces that are gluttonous, decadent, sensual, and excessive all at the same time. Common themes explored in her body of work include shame, hedonism, relationships, sexuality, and connection. When Breana isn't creating her own jewelry, she teaches workshops around New England and works as a studio assistant to other artists. @corpulence_drip

Whitney Hackett grew up in Fort Myers, FL, where she currently lives and works as an artist. She has a BFA from the University of Florida. Through the enshrinement of simple things, she elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. The juxtaposition of her imagery speaks to the interconnectedness of all life, the way we assign meaning to the material world, and the honoring of our existence. @whitneyhackettart

About the Curator

On curating Plays Well with Others:

As a curator and writer, I am always on the lookout for fresh and exciting work. I have an index of artists who, over time, reveal connections and concepts I want to explore. When a theme, such as “play,” starts to emerge, I can begin conceptualizing an exhibition or piece of writing. As the project moves forward, I prioritize certain values, such as representing artists of diverse backgrounds without tokenizing, highlighting underrepresented and emerging artists, featuring local and regional artists, and intermingling different disciplines and aesthetics without perpetuating historical hierarchies. I also strongly believe in paying artists, which is why I applied for and was thrilled to receive a City of Fort Myers Arts & Culture Grant for this exhibition. The generous grant allowed me to pay for shipping of work and material stipends to each artist, as well as advertising and installation needs.

come play with us!

A primary goal of mine was to engage with and benefit the local community through Plays Well with Others. However, it is also now a primary responsibility to keep the community safe and healthy, so those goals must be met from a distance. An artist-made coloring book was in the conversation early on and became the perfect way to do so. Each of the Plays Well with Others artists as well as me (the curator) and Ehren Gerhard (the Gallery Director at the Alliance) contributed pages to create A STRANGE & DELIGHTFUL COLORING BOOK for all ages.

Coloring book pages were free to the public at the Alliance during the exhibition and digitally to educators by request. Finished pages were displayed in the gallery during the exhibition - everyone was invited to play with us!

We also sold print and digital copies as a fundraiser! All proceeds from coloring book sales were donated to Southern Fried Queer Pride (SFQP), an Atlanta-based non-profit organization empowering Black queer and QTPOC centered communities in the South through the arts.

We have funding!

A great big shout out and thank you to the City of Fort Myers for awarding my curatorial project with an Arts & Culture Grant! The grant provides the exhibition with $2500 in funding, which will support artwork shipping, installation needs, marketing materials, an exhibition catalogue, free youth programming, and artist stipends for materials and production of work.

Many people may not realize that artists are often asked to pay for their own shipping of work to and from exhibitions. As a curator, it is my goal to seek out funding so that as many costs as possible are covered. I’m excited that I was also able to provide a small $100 stipend to each artist through this grant, because I believe artists should be PAID!
